Let’s Volt In

Living in the UK for more than 2 years now made me see how locals love their motherland and its inhabitants. Almost everywhere, you'll see lots of helping hands. They are naturally good-hearted individuals. In fact, charities here and there have proven it – registered or just plain community groups.

The Cooperative Membership Fund

Let me share with you this personal story and how it really amazed me. When I was in the process of fixing our family budget, I browsed the web and researched on the budget planners. Mr. Google gave me a bunch of results and upon clicking each, I have noticed that most of them have a portion for charity. Meaning, families really set aside part of their monthly income to share. By far, it's the coolest budget plan idea I have ever seen.

The Cooperative Membership Fund is one good example. To make up this fund, members contribute a percentage of their twice-yearly share of profits. The fund is then transferred to groups who carries out positive work in the community and these groups doesn't need to be registered charities – as long as their projects address a community issue, provide a long-term benefit to the community, support cooperative values and principles and ideally innovative in its approach.

If I were to create a group for my community, I will gather all the mums who can't find a day-job. I know the feeling of being turned down by companies because of the inability to have flexible time frame. This is to prove not just those who turned us down, but mostly ourselves, that being a full-time mom doesn't make us less of a person – that we can still do so much. Then we contribute what we can – arrange some activities for children who are less fortunate so they can enjoy their childhood as how normal kids would, provide advice to teens who find confiding to their own parents uncomfortable, and reaching to other parents who feel like their whole world has turned upside-side.

Food Tasting for Haiti

I believe we have chosen a good school for our daughter. The school and the teachers have been our helping hands in guiding our daughter in becoming a good person. She has learned so much since the Nursery days and now that she’s already a level higher.
Just last 10 February, the school conducted a food tasting project open for all parents to share whatever they fancy for others to taste. It’s basically the International Week so most parents shared popular dishes from their countries of origin. It’s my first time in the event, so I don’t have an idea how it’s going to be. I just decided to bake chocolate crinkles where I shared the recipe in Come Dine In, because Filipino stores are not very near and I don’t have the right ingredients to make any of my country’s lovely foods. I planned to do it next year, though.
Each has to pay £1 for every 5 desserts and another £1 for every 5 savouries. With the help of all the parents, teachers and students, the school was able to collect £200+ to be donated to Haiti.
What a nice way to share LOVE during the “Love Month”.
